LimeWire is a popular is a peer-to-peer file sharing client for the Java Platform. LimeWire uses Gnutella networks to locate and transfer files. LimeWire is free software.
LimeWire was written in Java; a programming language, and is able to be run on any computer with Java installed. Many operating systems support Java; these include Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and RPM Linux distributions. Mac OS 9 and previous versions was dropped when LimeWire 4.0.10 was released. LimeWire uses SHA 1 to ensure that downloaded data has not been compromised. If you’re looking for free downloads from LimeWire those are available from all sources. If you find a suspicious looking download of LimeWire or someone offers to “sell” you the application, be wary! All LimeWire software is free and should always be treated as such. There are too many dishonest people out there trying to prey on innocents; you should never give your credit card to any third party site that suggests you pay for anything you’re not 100% certain you should be paying for. Even after that you should check before you pay anyone; you could be signing over your paypal account verification for unlimited amount of debits, indefinitely! LimeWire offers sharing though it’s DAAP (digital audio access protocol) which means that any files that are shared will be detected and detectable though the local network by DAAP enabled devices such as most MP3 players and iTunes. LimeWire Pro is the advanced version of LimeWire but I would not go for the Pro version straight away. If you’ve used the free version for a while and you’ve decided that you and LimeWire should have been together all your life, then Pro may be something for you to consider. However, attention fades and I’d hate to see you get into a long term commitment on a product you’re not even planning on using as much as would warrant the Pro version. LimeWire was affected by the Supreme Court ruling in 2005 against the P2P networks. While there may not have been any lawsuits brought up specifically against LimeWire there is the whole situation with precedent and the fact that P2P is just frowned upon; both here in the States and elsewhere where other courts have followed the lead set by the US Supreme Court. If you’d like to download LimeWire for your desktop you’re certainly more than able to still do that today.
